WMDA Question: Would you take these, or be tempted to grind them up and feed them to someone you know?
Read this article on WIRED about a new drug that is supposed to make people nicer, and then navigate back here to let us know what you think.
Gandhi Pills? Psychiatrist Argues for Moral Performance Enhancers
I have very mixed feelings about the drugs we feed ourselves and our loved ones, but have also seen them help. I guess I am a believer in natural remedies and not drugging people, but when the rubber hits the road, I am willing to compromise this when its useful for me. Not sure I like what that says about me, but there you have it.
Having said that, I might be just a teensy bit tempted to feed these to some people I know and seeing what happens…….

For one, I think calling them “Gandhi” pills is a disgrace to his name.
And for two, I’m not going to get too deeply into it, but I am against this 100%. I think it’s heading into dark territory.
Lest I sound like a complete a-hole though (!), I don’t mean to sound harsh and I am actually grateful I saw your link to this article. It’s a good discussion.
I tend to lean towards the “we mask too many things with pills already” side of the fence and have to agree with Melissa that calling them Gandhi pills is stupid. I wonder if the doctor that coined that phrase was just looking for controversy when he did it.
moral performance enhancers???
are you kidding me?
hey everyone, if i suddenly start behaving morally, kill karen. i’d do it myself, but i’ll be too busy being moral cause she ground these fuckers up and fed them to me.
Interesting article. I generally err on the side of natural remedies and think we often run to the pharmacy when other things should be tried first. But having had friends who desperately needed medication for mental health issues, I know pharmaceuticals have their place. If someone was having problems with anti-social behavior and the drugs could prevent someone sliding into a psychotic killer phase–sure within the realm of good medical and psychiatric treatment! (If Jeffrey Dahlmer could have been prevented with meds–go for it!) But if the purpose is to make us all good compliant moral citizens–that is just too scary–1984 and some sci-fi flick rolled into one. I’m keeping my beverages away from Karen! j/k!
Hey Melissa – no worries – I agree with you about the name – clearly an attention grabber, and not at all what we’d like to associate with the man. Oh, and never worry about sounding too harsh – didja read our own comments on this one?
For the record, none of the people on this blog would actually be candidates for the secret pill administration (and of course I’d never really do it – I might try to convince someone to CHOOSE to try then, though……)
