grateful woman

Bikini or Honor?

So I was sitting down to write this post about a woman I saw at one of our local community pools.  And how I knew I was back in Southern California because here was this lovely mom of a three year old, perched on the edge of the kiddie pool in her teeny weeny bikini, thumbs busily texting away on a blackberry while her daughter played in the water.  And I was thinking wistfully about my bikini days, long behind me and feeling a little . . . jealous.  Not in a bad way, but in an older, fatter mom way.  And then this mom reached behind her into the baby carrier which I somehow missed seeing, and pulled out a seven week old baby.  She had a baby.  Only SEVEN WEEKS ago and still she looked like that.  That’s when I REALLY knew I was back in Southern California.

There I was in the middle of creating a post about that, because my life is frivolous and silly, when I started to feel really guilty about the fact that I hadn’t checked out Technorati and StumbleUpon and some of the other sites Miss Kristy asked us to check out.  So I decided to take a browse around on Technorati to see if I could figure out how to post some of our stuff on there, which I couldn’t, yes I’m admitting I officially need remedial HELP.  But I did click on the ‘FAMILY’ button, thinking I would find other silly and frivolous posts.  Instead, one of the top stories posted there is this one:

www.reuters.com/article/topNews/idUSDEL29449420080516?feedType=RSS&feedname+topNews

which is an article titled Indian village defends double “honor killing” and it broke my heart to read it.  Because it’s about a young woman who was 22 weeks pregnant and her boyfriend, it’s about how they were killed by her own father and uncle and cousins.  And how they left the bodies strewn in front of the girl’s family home as a badge of honor.  FOR HONOR.  I realize this is a part of the world that I don’t understand.  Really.  Because HONOR means something so different to me.  And then I thought of all the greiving parents in China who just lost children in the earthquake and in a country where families are only allowed to have one child, that loss is devastating.  But how in another part of the world, it is considered ‘honorable’ to put on a hood and go strangle your pregnant daughter while she’s washing her face in the morning.  I wonder if she knew it was her dad kicking her in the stomach?  Did she look up at him and beg her daddy, the man charged with the responsibility of protecting her, did she beg him to stop?  Huh.  Yeah, can’t really go there.

These two subjects manage to bring into sharp relief what it means to have the blessed fortune of being a woman born in America, as opposed to a dark corner of this world.  The many things we take for granted and how happy I am that there was a beautiful mom, sitting by the pool with her kids and how I have the luxury to think that my life would be a little better if only I could wear a bikini again.

Holy crap, now go and enjoy your weekend!
