Curbside Cupcakes – an Urban Dream

A great story on CNN Video about following your dream and it TOTALLY reminds me of JodyCakes.  A Washington DC Couple left their day jobs to follow their heart … now they are stressed out and tired … but they are happy and as an added bonus their clients are happy every day too.

I love it :D .  Following your dream always makes life more challenging and fun :D .  Don’t live your life wondering what if … make those dreams happen.

It was a tornado. And we almost lost the doublewide.

We had our first 5 year old sleepover last week.  Hubunit was wisely working and I was here on my own.  When I set it up, I thought, Huh, you can handle two kids.  After all, soon you’ll have two kids all the time.

Then the force of nature who is monkey’s friend showed up and I realized, F-A-W-C-K-I-N-H-E-L-L-F-I-R-E, I’m old.  This may not come as a surprise to any of you, but oddly, it shocked me.

Monkey’s friend has, uh, alot of energy.  Not that monkey doesn’t, but mostly it’s controlled, easy going energy.   And monkey’s friend likes to ask questions.  ALOT.  He’s really cute and sweet, with his curly hair and clip-on tie, but OMG, what was I thinking?

After playing with every toy in our house, which is a considerable amount of toys I’m ashamed to admit, he ran into the kitchen where I was making dinner (shhhhhh) and asked me, what are we gonna do now miss linda? I knew he’d gone rogue, like Jack Bauer in 24, because monkey would NEVER, EVER run into the kitchen to talk to me while I was fixing dinner.  But in that sweet breathy boy voice, which now haunts my dreams, he continued, there’s no toys to play with.

Well.  Him’s a liar.  Because when  I looked around, I could see that we don’t need new carpet any more, we now have toy carpet.  Seriously.  I have seen 25 kids play in this house for several hours and not have as many toys on the floor as this charming monster did in about 15 minutes flat.  Truly a talent.

Somewhere in the middle of the evening hubunit called me and before I’d had time to say hello, I had to say goodbye because they were breaking the toilet.  A toilet that monkey has managed to use without incident for the past year and a half.  An innocent toilet, who’s only crime was to be defenseless while having a lid that can be (gasp) lifted off and then dropped back down to create the wonderfully loud noise of ceramic hitting ceramic at a high rate of speed.  Poor toilet.

Then we had to get ready for bed, which involved water and going to the bathroom.  The horror.  But eventually I had them both shoved into their sleeping bags on the floor in monkey’s room, armed with flashlights and every stuffed animal known to childhood.

I crawled downstairs to dial Hubunit at work.

Him:  Hello?

Me (whispering):  Help me.

Him:  Helllllo?

Me (louder):  Seriously, HELP ME. (shouting)

Him:  Who is this?

Me:  We have to stop the adoption.

Me:  I’m not kidding.  We might get a tornado and I DON’T HAVE THE ENERGY.  I’m afraid.

Hubunit:  Ok.  We can kiss the $xx,xxx+ goodbye and I’ll get to keep my Harley.

Me:  Really?  You want to keep your Harley?

Tips for Woman traveling solo to Africa

WOW do I wish I had these tips before I ventured off to Africa.. Although I was not alone during the actual safari vacation I make the trek to Kenya from the US alone.  I must say it was very scary to arrive in a country all alone especially as a female (late at night) only to have a total stranger waiting at the airport with a sign with my name on it.  I had to trust that all would be fine… I can honestly say that my palms were sweaty and I kept my hand on the car door just in case I had to make open and jump…   I will that my adventure was amazing and that Kenya is a magical place.  The people were so kind and gracious and I look forward to returning.

Practical Tips for Women Traveling Solo to Africa

Compliments of Sandy Salle

Whether you need a break from the grind of daily life, are looking for a chance to reconnect with yourself, or are simply in need of a good adventure, traveling solo to Africa isn’t as scary or as difficult as you might think.

In fact, I believe it’s the best damn thing a woman could do for herself. Traveling solo to Africa is rewarding on so many levels-where else can you enjoy a good book while a herd of elephant congregates around a watering hole in front of you? Or spend an afternoon with people from all over the world, seeing cheetah stalk its prey?

Think you’ll be lonely, think again. You’ll never lack for companions and never be bored, and after a day or two, you’ll find yourself wondering why it’s taken you this long to step out on your own.

Now, ladies, before you go running off to the Serengeti or the banks of the Zambezi, here are a few tips to keep in mind when planning to travel solo to Africa.

1. Plan down to the last detail. To ensure you’re not left stranded and to ensure your safety, plan your transport, lodging, and other details well in advance. No matter where you go, the last thing you want is to be stuck somewhere without a phone, unable to reach the people you need to reach. Also, planning in advance means you’ll be able to see and experience everything you’ve dreamed of.

I suggest booking your trip through a reputable tour operator or hiring a private guide. Not only will they handle the details for you, but they also can advise the best places to visit or to avoid and help you plan a trip based on your needs and desires. If you plan on spending time in larger cities, such as Nairobi, Cape Town, or Harare, make sure you hire a guide who knows the city inside and out.

2. Dress appropriately. I’ve seen too many women travelers assume that what is acceptable in their community is acceptable in other cultures. Never assume. Do your research. If you are planning a trip to the coastal areas of Kenya where the population is Muslim, you need to know that the women are mostly covered and rarely seen in public. So the last thing you want to do-despite the heat and the tropical atmosphere-is to run around in a bikini top and shorts. Not only will you offend, but you’ll also stick out like a sore thumb.

While you should take into consideration cultural factors, it’s also important to dress for the elements. In countries such as Zimbabwe and Zambia, game drives and evenings can be chilly, so a fleece and or jacket is needed. During the day, I advise wearing sunscreen and a hat to prevent burning.

3. Pack Light. Ladies, we don’t need half the stuff we think we do. I always tell my clients to pack what they want, then remove half of the contents packed. Trust me, you don’t need nine pairs of trousers and two dozen tops. If you are planning a week-long safari, taking 2 trousers and a pair of shorts and 2-3 shirts is plenty. Many safari lodges provide complementary laundry services, so you don’t need to worry about lugging around dirty clothes.

4. Be aware. No matter how street savvy you might be, it’s important to be aware of your surroundings at all times. While you have little to worry about when staying at safari lodges, traveling in the larger cities requires you to be on guard.

I suggest not carrying a purse; instead, wear a money pouch around your neck. Again, dress appropriately and conservatively. If you receive catcalls or men whistling at you, ignore them and keep on walking. And, lastly, wear a wedding ring or something that resembles one. Wedding bands tend to deter interested parties from approaching you.

Parenthood thru Adoption, Step 1: Adoptionoscopy

Otherwise coyly known as an Adoption Home Study.  But really, it’s an oscopy of you.  A super long tube, much pulling and shoving and invasive emotional liquid is involved.  We just finished ours and certain tender parts of me still hurt.

Basically, every bad choice you’ve ever made in your entire life gets pulled out of the baaaack of the closet where you stuffed it with all that spandex, shaken off, shudder, magnified with a really bright light, shudder again and then must be explained in a way that lets the stranger charged with officially judging you still like you.

This process was harder for me than it was for Hubunit.  He’s perfect.  Me?  Not so much.  I used the phrase it’s been an adventure more than once.

And for some reason, every time I post an update on my adoption board, about ten people feel like it’s their duty to explain to me how they tried to adopt from Hungary and after several years with no luck, had to switch to another country.  And they always start those comments with I don’t want to grind your gossamer hope into goo and then scrape it off the bottom of my shoe discourage you, BUT . . .   Kind people, please just shut the hell up.  Kindly.

Our agency is currently looking for the child who will be referred to us.  And that part is exhilarating, exciting, mind boggling and oh yeah, downright terrifying.  Will it be a boy or a girl?  How old will they be?  What will their special need be?  We have stated a preference for a toddler boy and are open to a myriad of different medical needs.

But then one night, out of the blue, I had a very vivid dream that we adopted a two year old little girl, with dark hair and dark eyes, who had a heart defect.  The very next morning, before I’d said anything to Hubunit, he looked at me, out of the blue, (uh, not he looked at me out of the blue, because we’re married and he does look at me more often than that, but out of the blue he popped off with this comment) and said Alriiiiiight, we’re adopting a girl and her name is going to be Abigail.  I have friends who are foaming at the mouth that I have chosen not to share that info with our agency because I don’t want to influence them.   I firmly believe that the child who is meant to be ours, will find their way to our home and our hearts.  Plus, I don’t know how I feel about the name Abigail.

I share this story with you only so that if indeed we are referred a two year old girl with a heart defect, it will be confirmed that I, in fact, do know everything.   I already heartily suspect that this is true, but confirmation would be nice.

Patio time … here we come …

What a wonderful Mother’s Day.  I hope that you had a fabulous one TOO.

I actually had my doubts that I’d be able to take advantage of the wonderful Mother’s Day gift that Ron and Zac were giving me when I came down with food poisoning on Friday afternoon and still didn’t feel good by Saturday night. The plan was to go shopping for new plants for our patio.

Everyone who has been to our house knows about our forest of a back yard.  We have big trees that shade most of it and it really does feel like you are in a secret garden when you dim the lights on a summer evening and crack open a bottle of wine with friends.  One of my wishes for Mother’s Day was to clean up the patio from the winter muck, get rid of the plants that the winter claimed and to officially get ready for Spring.

We went shopping and I got a new Camellia, some Rosemary, Fuchsia, Gardenias and a bunch of colorful plants that I can’t remember right now (I knew I should have saved those for this post).  We refilled the hummingbird feeder, re-potted the plants, power washed the patio and even got new torches to keep the bugs away.  We even got a little grass seed to work into the spots that have died off during the winter (and because the trees need to be trimmed back again) but that’ll wait until we have a little more time on our hands. It really was an AWESOME gift, not just because I love the way it looks today but because it’s something that we did together :D .  Thank you Honey … I LOVE the Mother’s Day gift!!

This morning I poured myself a big glass of iced tea and went onto the patio to enjoy my new patio office :D .  Roxy and Bella definitely approve of the new office location – haha.  It was so nice to be out there again that I grabbed our new camera and took a couple shots to share.  Here are a couple of photos to show you the new additions:

I know that Bella doesn’t look too excited … but really … she is ;) .  She and Roxy do love it when I spend time out there.

Before Ron and I went to bed last night we were sitting on the couch and I said, “So honey, what are you putting on your wish list for Father’s Day?  Is it another fix it project?” To which he said, “uh … probably not”.  I really do appreciate all the work that he put in to bring the patio back to life.  It’s awesome again.

Top 10 Wines for Green Veggies & a FREE Wine APP

The Green theme seems to be in just about everything we do, wear, eat and well now drink!! Hehehe… I mean why not! When it comes to wine pairing we often think of the heart of the meal first and pair to that accordingly..never or not often would we think to pair  or even take into consideration those “green”  things that share the plate with the main event!  That is where incredible wine enthusiast and expert comes into the picture, Natalie MacLean.   Natalie MacLean is an independent journalist and author of the bestseller Red, White and Drunk All Over. More than 110,000 wine and food lovers subscribe to her free monthly e-newsletter. For Google searches on popular terms like “food and wine matching” and “wine newsletter,” Natalie’s site is often on the first page of the results as it has become a go-to resource for food and wine lovers. Natalie has won four James Beard Journalism Awards, including the MFK Fisher Distinguished Writing Award. At the World Food Media Awards in Australia, she was named the World’s Best Drinks Writer. (You go girl!)

When Natalie talks wine we all listen and if you don’t listen to her you should  :)   Here is her take on the Top 10 wines for Green Veggies in her own words:

San Francisco, April 23, 2010 – Which wines go best with “green food”, such as asparagus, peppers and peas? How about other fresh vegetables that we’ll enjoy this summer and fall?

“Green foods are the problem children of the wine world,” says Natalie MacLean, editor of one of the largest wine sites on the web at www.nataliemaclean.com. “But as a stubborn hedonist, I’ve found some terrific wines to drink with them.”

Natalie’s Top 10 Green Wine & Food Matches

1. Corned beef and cabbage: Pinot Blanc

2. Irish Stew: Cabernet Franc

3. Spring Asparagus: Gruner Veltliner

4. Field greens salad: Riesling

5. Tomatoes: Pinot Noir

6. Green peppers: Sparkling Wine

7. Grilled veggies: Rose

8. Green peas: Sauvignon Blanc

9. Spinach and bacon salad: Merlot

10. Artichoke: Verdicchio

Another very cool thing is that Natalie has a new and free yes free (my favorite 4 letter word) app that is all about wine, wine lingo,  wine reviews, recipes, blog posts, articles and most important (to me at least) wine pairing! It is great for those of us who in a pinch want to know what wine to buy that is friends with a certain type of food!!  This cool new mobile application is for iPhone, iPod Touch, BlackBerry, Droid and other smartphones.  You can access the new app at www.nataliemaclean.com/mobileapp.

This killer app really is  like having sommelier in your pocket oh and did I mention it was FREE!! !
