For the last couple of years, I have seen flocks of white birds flying together over the Santa Clarita Valley. Sometimes on the golf course, sometimes over in the Old Town Newhall area. I’ve been curious about what they were … but then …
Last week - Tuesday to be precise - there was a white pigeon when I went to do pilates at Pilates Teck. Karena commented that she/he was so pretty and asked me to take a photo of it with my phone. As I opened the door, it did not fly away but circled a bit and stopped by the bench on her front porch. It posed and I took the picture.

I got busy and forgot to send it - Sorry Karena!
Then today I went to work with Julie, my client at Rooms to Roam and Julie said … look at that white dove. I turned around to look and all be damned … it looks like the same bird. I haven’t seen a completely white pigeon before. She/He’s beautiful but … uh … why is it following me?

I took some time to look it up a little on the web … because I’m crazy about researching things that I do not know. I was a little curious about the symbolism to be honest. Once is kinda cool … twice in a week … a little more interesting.
What I found on white pigeons was quite sparse.
Some sites say that white pigeons are, in fact, doves or white plumed rock doves. Other sites say that pigeons, although related to doves, are a bit larger and are feral, so not the same thing even when they are white.
I also found this - Doves are most famous for being the bird that, in Christian legends, Noah released from his ark. It returned bearing an olive branch and now symbolizes peace.
In America, doves (or homing pigeons) are sometimes released at weddings as a ritual to ensure the couple will remain true to each other. Doves and Pigeons mate for life and are extremely fertile, often raising several broods each year, so they are an appropriate symbol for a marriage ceremony. The dove is also associated with the fertility goddess Astarte.
I even came across a page that said that “according to Greek and Roman mythology, Doves are the symbol of Aphrodite (the Goddess of Love, Beauty and Sexual Rapture). Aphrodite was rather promiscuous, basically she slept around with all the Gods - aka she was “dirty” so that’s why it makes sense that a dove is black because like Aphrodite the dove is black because it’s being dirty or promiscuous.”
According to The Mystical World Wide Web: “A lone white pigeon seen sitting on the chimney is not a good sign as it is associated with death.” Doves can sometimes represent the soul or spirit and releasing one at a funeral symbolizes the deceased flying on swiftly to the next life.
I think I’m ok there because both were by doorways not a chimney.
… so now (needless to say) I’m even more curious about these white birds. I’d love to hear what you think they symbolize. Did your grandma give you some insight to what it means when you come across these white birds TWICE in one week?
Maybe something “exciting” is going to happen … :: grins mischievously ::

I’m going to go with the fertility one. I think you will be pregnant before Christmas!!
From Harriette Birnholz Knight (via Facebook):
“What strikes me as really interesting is that my nephew’s torah portion at his bar mitzvah last weekend was the story of Noah’s Ark, and the dove was talked about quite a bit. The rabbi said that the dove symbolized the moment before newness comes. LIke the promise of something new. A dove animal totem also symbolizes new beginnings. A pigeon, on the other hand, represents love and security of a home. My sources write: If a Pigeon totem comes to you, ask yourself if you have forgotten your foundation, your heritage. Return to your home, your foundation, and draw upon the loving energies surrounding them.
In times of strife, huddle together with your family and draw upon its strength. Pigeon reminds us of the possibility of a loving and safe home. Personally I would go with the New Beginning messages since the bird is clearly white. And yes, doves can also represent maternity.”
ok … wait a minute … we are SO not doing the maternity thing. So it’s GOT to be something else - haha.
