OKAY CALM DOWN EVERYONE…it’s not a baby! Are you nuts??? We’re going to have an interview!
For those of you who know me, prolly know what’s going on in my life…not just through the blog, but because, well, we’re all family! I tell ya everything!
Mr. G. and I got some VERY exciting news this past weekend from Immigration. The date has been set for our Green Card interview for the morning of July 7th. Merely a month away. We are I am so excited. Mr. G, on the other hand, is excited, in his not so Happy Dance Doing engineer way.
Through the years, we’ve watched a lot of people go through this process and a lot of the time it was painstakingly long. We have been fortunate to have an attorney who is British and could speak our “language” and it has been relatively quick. I think that we only filed in January.
Mr. G. is a bit nervous because apparently at the interview they will ask you tons of questions to trip you up. Not only such things as Who drove here today? and What did you guys have for dinner last night? But also things like What color is her toothbrush and What did she buy you for your last birthday. Mr. G. likes to say he has Mad Cow’’s and he’s afraid that he won’t remember anything about me, about us…etc.
We’ve known people to get married just to get a green card (yes, we’re outlaws over here) and ya know what, I am wondering how they got through the interview…If the immigration officer asks him to name the brand of tampons I use or my bra size, I doubt he’ll know! Furthermore, purely just his affliction for being British, he’d be utterly mortified to boot. Brits don’t speak of these things in public. Unless it’s 5 guys from Scotland, filled to the brim with beer, in a pub, at last call…you get the picture.
Anyhow, in my typical OCD fashion - I’ve already researched it…gotten all of our documentation together…contacted the attorney for any final advice…and I’ve also begun quizzing Mr. G. (I’m sure he’s loving this one…)
Here is a conversation that we had on Sunday.
Me: “What are our common interests?”
Him: “We don’t have any.” (WHAAAAAAAAAAAA???)
I immediately puffed up into one big ol’ puffy ball of fret/anger and blurted out “What do you mean we don’t have anything in common?!?!” He just blinked. I de-puffed and said meekly, “music?”
Had I gone all these years, thinking we had something in common?!?
The fact of the matter is…he’s right. We don’t have anything in common, per se. I love food, socializing, being out and about, long walks in the rain (wah, wah, waaaaaaaaaaaaaah). He likes Motorcycles, Motorcycles, Motorcycles - oh, and he’s a stereophile. But you know what, I decided??? It didn’t matter - we must’ve had something in common - otherwise we wouldn’t have been together this long.
Grab a barstool, let Auntie Jody spin you a yarn.
We met one night at a British Pub (big shock there, right?) in May of 1995. We were both there with friends…and well, we just hit it off, who knows what we talked about…everything, nothing. You know?
We were both dating other people at the time and we remained good friends/drinking buddies throughout the years. We even went and had sushi one evening and I remember, we both kinda sat there, looking at each other for a few minutes…and then I finally said “This isn’t a date you know…” and he was like “Okay, cool” - it was kind of like that moment in Planes, Trains and Automobiles where John Candy & Steve Martin, wake up holding one another. Very uncomfortable.
And then in June 2001, after Tropical Storm Allison…we decided…hey, we kinda like each other. We had a whirlwind romance, and as he likes to say “He had 7 years to make up for…” and voila, here we are!
We’ve been through a lot…and every time our love for one another prevails…memory or not. As long as he doesn’t call me Susan or something. ‘Cos then I might just smack him in the interview.
